03 The Lady of the House

María Conesa.
Muse, myth, freedom.

Far more than a celebrated zarzuela prima donna: a woman ahead of her era who challenged social, political, and cultural conventions throughout Revolutionary Mexico.

The Narrative

A house where
memory lives on.

Built at the dawn of the 20th century during the architectural golden age of Colonia Roma, this residence witnessed Mexico’s rapid transition from Belle Époque elegance to vibrant modernity.

María Conesa —affectionately known as La Gatita Blanca— captivated Mexico City’s theaters with irresistible charisma that brought together revolutionaries like Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata, intellectuals, statesmen, and everyday theatergoers. Her magnetic personality transformed every evening into a national cultural event.

This estate on Monterrey was among her most private sanctuaries: an intimate hideaway where late-night performances yielded to bohemian salons, art appreciation, and restorative peace away from constant public fame.
